What does a fractional CTO cost?
Nobody surveys fractional CTO rates, so any single published figure is marketing rather than data. What is published is the UK market a fractional arrangement is priced against: a median CTO salary of £100,000 and a median contract CTO day rate of £635, in the six months to 13 August 2026. A full-time hire at that median costs £114,250 once employer National Insurance is added, before pension, equity or a search fee. A fractional arrangement is normally one to four days a month against that reference, scoped to what it is accountable for.
The figures below are sourced and dated. Where a number is not knowable, this page says so rather than inventing a range.
The published benchmarks
| Measure | Figure | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Median UK CTO salary, permanent | £100,000 a year | 62 advertised salaries, 6 months to 13 August 2026 (IT Jobs Watch) |
| 10th to 90th percentile, permanent | £87,320 to £144,750 | Same sample (IT Jobs Watch) |
| Median UK CTO day rate, contract | £635 a day | 24 advertised day rates, 6 months to 13 August 2026 (IT Jobs Watch) |
| 10th to 90th percentile, contract | £560 to £963 a day | Same sample (IT Jobs Watch) |
| Employer National Insurance | 15% of pay above £5,000 a year | Category A secondary rate, 2026 to 2027 (HMRC) |
Both IT Jobs Watch samples are small, 62 salaries and 24 day rates, because few companies advertise the role openly. Read them as the shape of the market rather than a precise price, and note that the contract median fell year on year while the permanent median rose.
Three cost shapes
What you are actually paying for
Full-time CTO: a fixed cost that does not flex
At the UK median, a permanent CTO is £100,000 of salary plus £14,250 of employer National Insurance, so £114,250 before pension contributions, equity, and whatever the search fee comes to. The cost is the same in a quiet quarter as a busy one, and it takes months to put in place and longer to unwind.
Agency or dev shop: a cost that grows with the build
You are buying hands, priced against volume. That works when the specification is settled. When it is not, the commercial incentive runs towards more build rather than less, and nobody in the room is paid to tell you the specification is wrong.
Fractional CTO: a cost scoped to the decisions
You buy a cadence, not a headcount. Using the published contract median as the reference point, two days a month is in the order of £1,270 at market rates, and the arrangement stops when you stop. Rates vary with scope, sector and how much of the decision you want me to carry, which is why the real number comes after a conversation, not before one.
The £1,270 illustration is arithmetic on a published median, not my rate card. It is here so you can sanity-check any quote you receive, including mine.
What moves the number
Scope of accountability
A written audit with recommendations is priced differently from standing accountability for delivery, suppliers and spend. What the engagement is answerable for moves the number more than the hours do.
Cadence and duration
A one-off review over a few weeks, a fixed involvement through a programme, or ongoing availability at a set rhythm. Longer, steadier engagements price differently from short intensive ones.
Sector and regulatory load
Regulated environments carry more evidence, more documentation and more scrutiny. Fintech, gambling and health work is heavier than an unregulated SaaS product at the same stage.
Travel and on-site time
Remote by default. Outside the UK, on-site days and travel are quoted separately and agreed in advance, never assumed into a monthly figure.
How I price the work
A first conversation, at no cost, to establish what the decision in front of you actually is. Then a written scope with the cadence, what it covers and what it is accountable for, quoted in sterling. You review it quarterly, and you can stop.
No lock-in, no build team of mine to keep busy, no supplier referral fees. If the honest answer is that you need a permanent hire, an interim, or nothing at all, that is what I will tell you, and when to hire your first CTO sets out how I judge it.
Questions
Cost questions founders ask
- How much does a fractional CTO cost?
- There is no credible published survey of fractional CTO rates, so treat any single quoted market rate with suspicion. The nearest published UK benchmark is the contract CTO day rate: a median of £635, with a 10th to 90th percentile range of £560 to £963, from advertised vacancies in the six months to 13 August 2026 (IT Jobs Watch). A fractional engagement is normally priced as a cadence, for example a set number of days a month, against that kind of reference point.
- Is a fractional CTO cheaper than a full-time CTO?
- In total spend, usually, because you buy less time. At the UK median a permanent CTO costs £100,000 in salary plus £14,250 in employer National Insurance at the 2026 to 2027 rate of 15% above £5,000, so £114,250 before pension, equity and recruitment fees. A part-time arrangement at a few days a month is a fraction of that. But if the business genuinely needs daily technical leadership, fractional is not a discount on a full-time CTO, it is a different thing.
- What is a typical fractional CTO retainer?
- Most engagements settle into one to four days a month, reviewed quarterly. Below one day a month there is not enough contact to hold anything to account. Above four, the question is usually whether an interim or full-time appointment is the honest answer.
- Do you charge for the first conversation?
- No. The first conversation is to work out whether there is a problem I can help with, and there is no obligation. If the answer is that you do not need a fractional CTO, I will say so.
- How do fractional CTO costs compare in the US?
- US executive compensation is higher than the UK equivalent, which widens the gap between a full-time hire and a part-time arrangement. I contract with US entities directly in sterling, with no employment, benefits load or equity attached, and travel costed per engagement rather than assumed.
- What is the cost of not having one?
- Harder to price and usually larger: a build that runs months late, an agency invoice nobody is checking, an architecture decision that has to be unwound after the round, or a security questionnaire that stalls an enterprise deal for a quarter. Those are the costs founders call me about, not the day rate.
